So you consider yourself a learned poker buff, huh? But why is it that even with hours, days, weeks, months, and years of practice, you're still stuck on being a mediocre player? Maybe you even dreamed of making it big like those poker celebrities you see playing on television. Perhaps you always picture yourself joining the ranks of Dave "Devilfish" Ulliot, Phil Ivey, or John Juanda. But at the back of your mind, you're aware that you still lack the skills to become a hot shot poker pro. Believe it or not, world-class poker players are made, not born, so there is still a big chance that you can hone your game and manage keep up with expert poker gamers.
Most of the adept poker players did not attain their expert level through constant playing alone. Although it helps to improve your game by regularly participating in poker games, it is also essential to keep in mind that studying several poker strategies is also plays a major part in winning.
As it is often said in the poker world, a winner is not the one who walks away winning the most number of pots, but the one who gets away with the most money. Therefore, to be considered a certified poker master, you must win plenty of cold, hard cash. This does not necessarily mean that you have to lose big bucks on your part as well--- what it really takes to become a poker whiz is to have plenty of clever thinking and a handful of guts. Aside from playing his game right (and playing it clean), a savvy poker player knows that smart betting is another key to poker success.
Poker is all about the money, baby, but before you squander your life savings on playing imprudent poker, you must know the basic betting styles and betting strategies first. If you think that winning poker is all about playing your cards right, then you got another think coming.
Different poker variations have different betting types. The three betting styles that are used in most poker games are the pot limit, the no limit, and the fixed limit. Online poker rooms and even traditional poker arenas make use of these three betting styles. It is important to know all these to help a player determine the right betting style that would suit his pocket. Obviously, a player short in cash cannot immediately jump on a poker table with high limits or huge betting increments or he'll go broke. And of course, no poker in his right mind wants to end up penniless.
No-limit betting is offered in many tables at different poker rooms. In no-limit tables, a player's maximum bet depends on the amount of chips he has. A player can either bet any number of chips already in the pot, or he can raise. Meanwhile, in tables that have pot limit betting, players are only allowed to bet or raise the number of chips already in the pot. Unlike in no-limit betting, pot limit betting always depends on the pot amount. On the other hand, limit betting permits a player to bet or raise in fixed number of increments. Players then do not have the liberty to bet on any amount they like.
When you already identified the betting style of your choice, then you can now proceed to different strategies to make your gaming even more effective. A lousy betting strategy can make all your hard-earned cash evaporate in a snap. You should know that when you bet your money, you should also be ready to lose it.
Betting is an art which if mastered will allow a player to reap massive rewards. There aren't really 'musts' in betting; a player can bet for plenty of reasons. Of course, it is a common knowledge that players only bet when they have a competent hand. But you can tweak your betting moves to your advantage and psych out your opponents. It's pretty risky, but when you are already a seasoned mind or face reader (which is a must for poker players), this should come to easy to you.
If you got an excellent hand, you can go with an over-the-top betting. This can cause two reactions; either you scare your opponents or incite them to raise you. If you're lucky, someone might think you're bluffing with your massive bet and raise you, and that's good. You can also make an extravagant bet or raise if you got an okay hand, and you plan to terrify other players into thinking that you got a very favorable hand, thus forcing those who have a shot at winning to fold. Take note: excessive betting is all right only when you got a strong hand that has the potential to win, but if what you got is an extremely weak hand, forget it.
When it comes to bluffing in betting, facial expression is very important. While many says that players should maintain a poker face when playing, a little acting goes a long way. For example, if you got a great card, but wants your opponent to think that you got a bad one, a well-fronted grimace is enough to fool them. Just don't overdo your acting, or they would think you're having a bad case of flatulence.
Another tip when it comes to betting: never be afraid to fold. Sometimes, the mood at poker tables can be very intimidating, in which case, to fold or not to fold is a very big question. Generally, players who have a poor hand should immediately fold, and drop any hopes to get a better hand through a lucky draw. It is always better to forfeit the early bets than to get caught up in a betting standoff with a player who surely has a winning hand.
Now that have you know the basic strategies in betting, it is up to you to apply it in your games. Practice always makes perfect, and in no time, you'll be reaping bundles and bundles of cash. Before you plunge head on in a real cash game, make sure you have learned all these strategies by heart. Happy playing and good luck!
