Poker is one of various game of cards where bets or wagers are placed. It is therefore classified more as a gambling game since bet money is usually involved. The bet money is generally placed on the game table's corner, though there are cases when these are placed in a container used specifically for poker games. This accumulated bet money is referred to more commonly as the pot.
The goal of any poker game involves simply taking home the pot. To achieve this end, a player needs to produce the highest card combination possible, which is referred to as the poker hand, or simply hand. This is the simplest rule observed in any poker game.
Types of Poker
This popular card game comes in many different forms. Generally, the games can be categorized in three broad divisions, namely Stud, Draw, and Widow Poker, also known as Community Card games. Each division has one specific poker game which is commonly played by many poker gamblers. Stud poker has the Seven-Card Stud, draw poker has the Five-Card-Draw, and the community card has the Texas Holdem.
Basically, draw poker involves drawing new cards only after a player is dealt his initial set of cards. A player usually receives his cards face down:
Betting can be made only after receiving the first card set and after drawing the new cards in later rounds.
On the other hand, stud poker involves an initial set of cards, some face down while others are dealt face up:
Betting is allowed only after a player gets a new card face up. He can likewise bet after he or she is dealt his last card face down.
It should be noted that in both of the above poker games, there are always either five or seven cards involved. The two games themselves have two distinct variants. These are the High poker games and the High/Low games. High poker games simply mean the player holding the biggest card combination or hand is declared the winner. Meanwhile, the High/Low version involves splitting the pot prize between two player extremes: the biggest hand player and the smallest card combination player.
Community card games meanwhile are poker game types which involve players being dealt a set of incomplete cards known as "hole cards� the values of which are unknown to the other players. The players then draw cards found on the game table which have been dealt face up. These said cards are called the community cards. These are combined with the players' hole cards in order to complete their hand.
The community cards are collectively known as the "board" or "widow" and are usually given in two ways, either involving a straight line or arranged uniquely involving a particular pattern. Either way, players need to be aware that the community cards are shared among all the players taking part in the competition.
Common Poker Games
When it comes to popularity, each general poker type has one particular version that is commonly played by practically every poker player in town. For draw poker, there is the Five-Card-Draw. For Stud, there is the Seven-Card-Stud. For the community card games, there is Texas Holdem. Each of these specific poker games has its own set of innovative features that makes every one of them a favorite among poker game enthusiasts.
Five Card Draws are often the very first types of poker that a new player will learn. These are the games commonly featured in many wild west cowboy movies.
A Five-Card Draw involves five cards given to every player face down. Betting begins with the player located on the dealer's left side.
After examining the cards, players decide which cards to keep and which to discard. This done, they are given another set of cards, the number of which will depend on how many cards they threw away, assuming there were such cards. Then another betting begins.
Usually, a showdown will take place after two betting rounds. This is where only two players are left and they will try to come up with a winning card combination. The player with the better hand wins.
Meanwhile, in Seven Card Stud games, players are initially given three cards, one of which is given face up while the other two are given face down. Thereafter, betting starts, usually with the smallest-card player. After placing their bets, players can do any of the following: call (placing a bet), raise (increasing the present bet), or fold (not participating in one particular betting round).
The second round then commences, this time starting with the player having the highest hand. This will be the case with all succeeding rounds. Generally, Seven Card Stud has three rounds where cards are given with faces up. A final round involves cards with their faces down. After all these rounds, the remaining players will engage in a showdown where they will show their respective hands, with the player possessing the highest card combination getting the pot.
For community card games, there is no doubt that its most popular game variant is the Texas Holdem This particular poker variation can involve as much as eleven players and a minimum of two and often starts with two players, usually those found on the left side, who will place an initial predetermined bet before the cards are given. In general, the player nearest the dealer (left side) shoulders half the predetermined first bet while the other player shoulders the remainder.
The cards are then dealt, with each player receiving two cards that are faced down. These are the player's hole cards. Afterwards, betting begins, often from the left side of the first two players who raised the initial betting amount. Players will now either fold, call, or raise on their turns.
When the first wager round is over, the deck's top card will be discarded and the dealer will flip the succeeding three cards from the deck. He places these on the game table face up. These cards will now compose what is known as "community cards" which players can use to combine with their respective hole cards in order to come up with a winning hand.
A second betting round follows, observing the same procedure. This set-up will continue for three more rounds, or until the cards on the game table total to five. By the end of the fifth round, the remaining players will show their respective cards. The player possessing the best card combination wins the game. When the winning hand is composed of purely community cards, meaning it has none of the players' hole cards, then the pot is split among all the players.
No matter what type of poker game you prefer, the key to successful game play is to always know when to stop. This applies to all kinds of poker variations. Poker is a gambling game. This being so, players should always keep in mind that in poker, you can either win big or lose big. It all depends on how you control yourself.
