Playing Blackjack Online 1: The Game

The Game
Among the games that attract a large number of players in many online gambling sites is blackjack. This does not really come as a surprise because blackjack is one card game that has always enjoyed a large crowd since it was first played in France on the seventeenth century where it was first known as vingt-et-un, which literally means twenty and one.

However, before we can fully appreciate a game like blackjack, we need to understand more how it all started. Actually, there are no exact and authentic records of the origin of this famous card game. All that we have are mere tales describing the early versions of blackjack and how it was played during its early days of evolution.

Nevertheless, there are several versions on the origin of blackjack and many of them are quite fascinating. One of them affirmed that blackjack started as a popular Russian card game where it was known as Ochko, which means the hole. Blackjack then was a passion among early Russians, especially among the masses, though the popular game was also being played in traditional casino fashion.

It was the French, however, who coined the name blackjack when the first two cards drawn by a player was composed of a pair of spades -- an Ace while and a Jack. Since the color of spades is black and the second card drawn is a Jack, the game came to be renowned as blackjack.

Blackjack then moved to the United States by the end of the historic French revolution where it quickly became a big hit. Gambling then was a flourishing trade in America, and blackjack inevitably got caught in the cycle. Basically uncontrolled until the nineteenth century, the gambling industry soon became a source of corruption. Eventually, most of the games were criminalized, including blackjack. The industry then went underground where gangsters became the operators, making many gambling games even more dangerous.

Finally, the government stepped in and legalized the industry, creating laws along the way to protect the rights of players. Thus the casinos of Las Vegas were established and here is where blackjack momentarily became a favorite among many players.

Today, blackjack remains a top favorite in many casino houses, but more so among gambling sites. One big advantage though of internet-based blackjack over its land-based counterpart is that it largely has a lower house edge. This usually gives blackjack aficionados a relatively easier chance of winning in a game, provided players have a consistent and effective game plan.
