Many poker players employ this basic strategy of making their opponents believe that they have a strong hand by betting on it hoping that their opponents will believe them and eventually cause them to leave the game so they can keep the pot prize all to themselves. In truth however, what they have is a terrible hand. That in a very brief sense, is what is commonly called as bluffing, and many players use it in any given poker game. Some have even raised it to the level of an art.
Why do poker players resort to bluffing? Can they just not play the game fair and square? Well, bluffing is one way to keep the game of poker alive and exciting. Without it, poker will become a very boring game. It will just be a simple card game where bets are placed, and the player having the best card combination will win. Nothing really wrong with that, but try doing it non-stop with the same result over and over. Eventually, it will become routine instead of a game.
But bluffing brings an element of surprise to poker. With it, everyone keeps making a guess as to who really holds the best card. And when bluffing works, more surprises spring up, because often, the player who made the bluff does not really hold a winning hand.
More than spice and variety, however, there are other significance of bluffing in poker games. A player usually bluffs in low limit competitions for the simple reason that if no one among his opponents believes his bluff, then he does not lose much, at most he will only be asked to make one additional bet. Of course, if his bluff proves to be effective, then he has much to gain and practically nothing to lose.
Yet, bluffing can also be an effective tool in games where the pot prize is quite large. When such is the case, bluffing easily becomes a very tempting alternative, and when used wisely, can lead one to take home the pot.
Bluffing is also a way of establishing a sort of rapport with other players. This becomes especially true when ranged against good poker players. These people will readily welcome the chance to trade wits and talent with you. In the end, you can even form lasting friendships with them that goes beyond the boundaries of poker.
Of course, not all players, even the really excellent ones, bluff in their games every time. Bluffing needs to be practiced at the right place and at the right time but never in all places at all times. Players interested in employing this strategy should first need to know what type of opponents he or she is up against. This is basically what sets the veteran player from the novices. The latter will most likely believe each and every bluff that comes his way. The veteran however, will more likely study the events surrounding the game, including the bluffing player and the pot.
