Bluffing used to be known more as an art. In simple terms, it means that this basic poker strategy used to be employed as an act of natural occurrence. No deep conscious planning was thought of when bluffing was used. One poker player simply was not able to produce a formidable hand so in order to stay in the game, he had to bluff his way through one particular round.
These days however, bluffing has become known more as a science, which means that when it is used, it is founded on several grounds, namely sound principles, good planning and a basic knowledge of one's position in the game. Poker essentially has two objectives namely, its own, and the goal of the player. The game's objective is always, to award the pot to the player who was able to come up with a winning hand. The goal of the player, on the other hand, is to win the game by being able to come up with a good card combination. If this is not possible, then the player has to find ways by which he can still have a good chance of taking home the prize. This is where bluffing will essentially come in as a handy game tool.
However, employing bluffing techniques simply to help you make it through a particular poker round will most likely be largely ineffective. This is because your opponent or opponents may notice some inconsistencies in your actions, especially with the way you handle your cards. If they are good players, they will likely conclude that you are merely bluffing.
For the technique to be effective, bluffing should ideally be a poker arm prepared well in advance and used sparingly at certain intervals of the game. The purpose of this is to make your opponents fall into a false sense of security, basically to make him think that you are a straight-up poker player.
The key of course to effective bluffing is to be able to exercise some degree of control over your opponents' minds. To make them feel secure in their game plays. For your part, it will be a good idea if you can have an ideal card set in your mind and to make use of it during the game, even placing bets on it all throughout the competition, making you and the other players believe that you actually hold such a hand when in reality you don't.
Of course, it will really be up to your opponents whether or not to call your bluff. In the end, it really all boils down to a mind game, where only the player with the better mental faculties will eventually emerge as the game's victor.
There are many kinds of bluff just as there are many ways of winning in poker. In a number of cases, bluffing itself becomes the tool by which players win the pot and not necessarily their card combination. Whatever it is, there can be no denying the fact that bluffing has become part of poker and is an indispensable weapon in one's quest for the ultimate poker pot.
