How To Bluff In Poker 6: Pure Bluff vs Semi-Bluff and Other Bluff Strategies
Pure Bluff vs Semi-Bluff and Other Bluff Strategies
Bluffing is a strategy used by poker players to intimidate opponents by pretending that they possess all the good cards. In some instances, the player will raise or make his bets to somehow convince other poker gamers in the table that he has the lucky cards. Playing poker in the interactive gaming hypermedia is way too different from land-based poker games. Bluffing in online poker games is a bit complicated because poker gamers cannot use facial expressions, body gestures, and lip and eye movements to fool the other contenders. Poker rooms do not have emoticons yet to express how players feel so the least and at the same time the best thing that they can do is raise their bets to the prize pool. Another measure that players can follow to pretend that they handle a nice set of cards as far as online poker is concerned is by not posting anything on the chat box and keeping their emotions to themselves.
Complicated as it may seem, bluffing is still an effective technique especially during rounds when all the community cards are taken and a player only has 50-50 odds of winning in the tournament. Bluffing in a poker tourney or in any other card game or casino tournament for that matter is always risky. Bluffing means poker gamers are not entirely happy with their hand that they are using measures other than their flair with cards to win in the game.
Bluffing simply means the poker gamer has to pretend that he has a better hand than the other players in the tournament. For instance, even if he needs the help of a community card or draw for a card to improve his hand, he must still mislead his players by acting confidently that he has a flush. If his opponents are too thick to believe that he has a flush or a straight draw, instances are these silly players will fold. If this happens, his bluff technique proves to be efficient and he takes home the prize pot. The ultimate reason poker players use the bluffing technique is because they want to ensure that they'll be able to buy or take the pot.
Bluffing can be among the hardest strategies in poker. But a player must also understand that bluff strategy is also an essential part of poker. No one can exactly determine when the bluffing term was officially introduced to the poker audience. However, poker enthusiasts know that if a poker gamer does not use the technique in poker, there is no possibility that the gamer will be an expert of the said game. Bluffing should not be taken lightly like it's not wholly important to win in poker. Because contrary to the perception of newfangled gamers, bluffing takes a gamer's blood, sweat, and tears. Seasoned poker contenders know for a fact that to be able to bluff efficiently, one must possess a good poker sense, proper timing, and a whole lot of guts to pull his act off. Bluffing is already an integral part of every poker game. The absence of bluffing in a tournament simply means that the tourney is as boring as political advertisements.
Almost any other poker enthusiasts have already tried the bluffing technique once or twice in their poker games. Most of them are wholly aware about the two kinds of bluffing strategy -- the pure bluffing and semi-bluffing. Pure bluffing is a strategy wherein the poker player makes a raise or a bet when he has an inferior or weak hand. Inferior or weak hand is a term in poker used to describe a hand that is very low and has no chances of improving nor winning even if given the opportunity to make a draw. When this kind of bluffing is used, the poker player pretends that he has a good hand and at the same time hoping against hope that all the other players will fold. New players and even the seasoned ones cannot instantly assume that pure bluff is an overly effective bluffing technique. Like every other measures employed by poker gamers to win in the game, pure bluff is also not wholly efficient. Therefore, pure bluff must be used sparingly. It can work well in some situations but at the same time it can also fail. Just think of it this way: If all the other players notice that a poker gamer is a phenomenal bluffer, there might be a high possibility that the player will become the table's fish. If a player uses pure bluff on a shoestring, he'll have greater chances of deceiving his opponents.
Semi-bluff is another form of bluffing strategy wherein the poker player raises the bet even if he is completely aware that he has a good chance of winning in the game. For instance, when the player has a set of cards that are suited to make a flush, he will attempt to bluff other opponents and make them fold instantly. But if the other players knew that he's merely bluffing and refused to fold, the player will make his flush anyway through the community cards available and defeat them.
When a player uses the semi-bluff technique, he is raising a bet because he knows that his cards will improve on the succeeding rounds. To make things simple, semi-bluff takes place when a poker player makes a bet with a hand that is currently weak but has the potential to become a very strong hand.
This type of bluff is actually easier to execute than the pure bluff because the player is not taking risk and he is merely waiting for the other poker players to fold or quit the game. It's like the player is simply bidding his time until his name is declared as the poker champion in that specific round. Semi-bluffing can only be done when the player has a good set of cards in hand. The ultimate goal of players employing semi-bluffing is to make their opponents fold instantly so that they don't need to wait for the next rounds. What is good about the two mentioned types of bluffing is that aside from helping gamers get a free playing card, they add a considerable quantity of trickery to poker tournaments.
