Online Gambling 2: History Of Gambling

History Of Gambling
As what many already probably know, gambling is an age-old custom that can trace its roots back even to the prehistoric times. Archaeological excavations prove that primitive people already engaged in gambling thousands of years ago. There are even cave drawings found in Pompeii that depict ancient people gambling. An astragali, a sort of dice made of an ankle bone of an animal, was discovered and is believed to date some 40,000 years already. Chinese also came up with a tile game called Go which is solely based on chance, and Greek soldiers used to amuse themselves with dice rolling games. Native Americans also made dice out of plum stones and believed that chance games have curing effects.

Since the ancient gambling practices, gambling have evolved into many forms and variations. When cards and tiles were invented in the ancient world, it spawned many games and also paved the way for other kinds of gambling. Aside from playing cards, tiles, and sports, people also gamble and bet on animal combat sports such as cockfights. At present, gambling took another evolution in the form of online gambling.

For years, gambling are held in traditional venues or in brick and mortar casinos. Las Vegas remains an oasis (despite its desert location) for many gamblers in the United States and worldwide. With the emergence of online gambling, the World Wide Web can now be considered another haven for gamblers.

The beginnings of online gambling is related to the history of the Internet. Of course, gambling over the World Wide Web would not be possible without the Internet. The year 1996 marked the launching of the first online casino, the InterCasino. A few months and years after that, more online gambling sites also sprouted following the unveiling of InterCasino in the Internet world. Presenting online gambling to the world proved to be a difficult task, as the concept met many opposition from church leaders, moral advocates, and lawmakers. The concept of gambling being readily accessible to anyone over the Internet received both jeers and cheers. Naturally, among the biggest detractors of online gambling are legal traditional casinos for reason that are already obvious.

But the strong oppositions and protests were drowned out when the Free Trade and Processing Zone Act was passed by the High Commission of Antigua and Barbuda. The act gave way to the Division of Gaming which handed out the foremost official jurisdictional licenses allowing casino operators to open their online gambling sites legally. After Antigua and Barbuda, several countries like Canada and UK followed, but the United States remains firmly resistant in granting licenses.

Online gambling received further improvements, thanks to Microgaming and Cryptologic. Cryptologic was the first to provide security on online casinos through an encryption technology that prevent hackers from accessing important information such as credit card numbers. Microgaming, on the other hand, were the first to introduce innovative and reliable softwares for realistic-like playing of favorite casino games.
