Cheaters in Online Poker 3: Old and New Tricks in Online Poker Cheating

Old and New Tricks in Online Poker Cheating
Cheating has definitely made its way through many online gambling games. Poker games, most certainly, are not exemptions. What makes this even worse is that many of the tricks being used by online cheaters these days are actually a combination of both the old and new tricks and often make use of some very sophisticated and sometimes undetectable systems.

What exactly are these modern cheating devices? Well, since most internet gambling sites rely on the ubiquitous computers for the basic operations of most of their online games, these are the prime weapons being used by many online cheaters.

Using computers to manipulate casino games is actually an old trick. There are many variations of this particular type of electronic deception that uses the internet as medium for swindles. There are cases wherein a group of players will come together, form a secret team and through collusion, set up multiple websites, then register in an online casino under different names and different addresses. Afterward, the team executes its plans by setting up of at least seven computers in one room. Typically, there will be about seven different players, but one during the tournament period, one person is tasked to oversee all the cards composing every player's hands. Clearly, this opens the door for rampant poker tournament manipulation.

However, the more dangerous online cheaters are the hackers. These are the computer wizards who can easily penetrate the electronic security system of internet poker rooms. They may be based in China or in an obscure country, but that does not matter. Once these hackers intrude the system, they can practically see everything that takes place inside and beyond the game area including the players' cards, thus they have the freedom to manipulate the players if they so desire.

For far older tricks used to cheat one's way to poker victory, there is the ever-reliable bluffing technique. Believe it or not, this ancient ploy continues to be effective even in the modern version of poker games, which are largely internet-based. Perhaps, one reason for this is that with internet poker, new and inexperienced poker players are given the opportunity to play the game even with less than sufficient gaming experience. With more neophyte gamblers playing online, there are naturally more opportunities to use bluffing strategies more effectively.

Another old poker trick involves the quick and quiet slipping of a bogus or counterfeit chip into a set of stacks. Presumably, once the bogus chip is chosen, the player who slipped it in will have a definite edge over his opponents, at least for that particular poker round. In practice, however, this particular poker trick can be more effectively used in an off site poker table rather than in an online setting.

An equally old poker cheating trick is collusion, where one player teams up with a partner or partners. Two players will initially join the game and in a variety of signals, they will tell one another what kind of card each one is holding. Some discreet signals may include the stacking or re-stacking of chips, or putting the chips into a certain position or using them to create a certain picture for example. These are the secret tricks meant to tell the intended player what kind of card his cheating partner is presently holding.

As for new cheating techniques, there are now personal and compact computers which are designed to compute the odds of a player winning in a particular poker game. Of course, these devices are generally accepted by most online gambling sites. Yet, if you really think about it, they can be strictly classified as cheating devices since they help players in narrowing the odds against them.

One very old poker trick that has now assumed a modern persona involves the marking of cards. What makes this unique nowadays is that here, cheaters use a material referred to as a dowb. This is a solution which players sprinkle on the cards. The trace is invisible, just like the solution, and cannot be seen unless players wear a special type of contact lenses. Once the solution evaporates, it leaves no trace, thus it is truly a perfect weapon for cheating.

Then there are the bots, more commonly known as robots that have special poker programs in their systems. These are fast becoming popular, or notorious, primarily because of their many sophisticated programs, including the power to identify the cards being held not just by one, but by several poker players. Of course, while there may be some electronic whizzes who can create such modern structures, most bots are actually owned and operated by the online gaming sites themselves. Many of them use these bots to sit in half-empty poker tables and play the game alongside real poker players. However, the sites quickly add bots until the virtual players reach the level of sophistication where they can possibly win over real players. Yet, that is subject to debate since one online casino was reported to have closed down allegedly because many of its bots were able to beat many real poker players simply by reading through the cards that they were holding.

With the existence of these tricks in the online gambling field, one wonders whether or not internet gambling will still be around in ten to twenty years. The probability is that it will still be in existence, but that mechanical players will become more common and less human participation in the games, especially in poker, is expected. Ultimately, it may come down to computers fighting it out against computers for the jackpot prize.

But for now, the most practical game plan for poker players is to satisfy themselves with playing in low-stake poker tournaments, especially if they are not comfortable with the lingering feeling that either the online casino or one of their online opponents is cheating them. Cheaters are more known to hover in poker games which involve extremely big pot prizes. Small poker pots do not attract them that much.
