Cheaters in Online Poker 4: Impacts of Cheating on the Online Poker Industry

Impacts of Cheating on the Online Poker Industry
Like any type of industry, online gambling -- poker, in particular -- also has its share of flaws and vulnerability. It is very much likely that unethical practices are very rampant; it's just that it's not discussed openly because of their illegal nature. Not only players are found guilty of committing these dubious acts, but any personality could cheat in the realm of online poker. This is just the awful truth that online poker industry must have to deal with in a way any person is susceptible to common cold throughout his lifetime.

Most cheating acts are offsprings of ambiguity. Rules can sometimes be equivocal and have lots of loopholes. Players eventually formulate ways to go around these rules that are open to individual interpretations. They commit acts in their desire to accumulate the largest amount of prize possible -- a thing which at first may not seem to violate any written rule. But once done compulsively, in the long run, it appears that these certain acts compromise the value of fairness and equality among players that poker sites aim to promote. This appalling scenario prompts poker site operators to draft a rule to finally declare these said acts illegal and punishable, clearing away ambiguity and putting the game into order rather than allowing it to be governed by classic and old-fashioned greed.

Multi-accounting has shown to be the most popular way of cheating, yet according to experts, it is the feeblest effective way to cheat in poker sites. This involves a player registering multiple accounts, with the help of friends, at one particular poker site, then eventually playing with all the accounts all by himself. Another alternative is to register an account using different computers, thus having many account on one site. Also, multi-accounting can be in the form of players sharing accounts with one another. Players go this far for large advantage of expected value, especially in multi-table tournaments.

Another online poker practice that is considered cheating is soft playing a buddy, a trick wherein you play a hand in a passive way, instead of in an aggressive manner. Meanwhile, other cheaters use the method of dumping chips, wherein players seem to intentionally give away the game to their partner; but in actuality, they have already kept aside a cut on the prize that their partner will take home.

The moment a man comes up with a better trap, nature comes up with a better mouse. As online poker industry advances with the help of technological innovation, site rules and regulations will always be subjected to reviews and amendments. Like two parallel rail tracks, people will also continuously devise means to break the law in the name of bigger prizes.

Domination of fraud in online poker industry may likely establish a culture of cheaters among players. The most possible rationalization that anyone can anticipate is that "everybody's doing it, so why can't I?" Should prevalence dictate a certain act's acceptability in the society? If you will look at it, once an act, regardless of its nature, becomes a habit of most people, it eventually becomes the norm. It's the majority that sets the paradigm. But of whoever wants to have anything to do with one poker site, or any gaming site for that matter, that basically operates on tolerated malpractice is anyone's guess.

Probably the biggest and most general impact cheating has on online poker industry is that any exposed act of cheating -- especially those that have already been carried out successfully -- strips the industry of its impeccable image, particularly in the area of security. Online poker sites can be cheated after all. This will inevitably lead to the lost of confidence of people -- whether aspiring, fresh, or seasoned players -- to poker sites that have fallen prey to the uncanny ways of cheaters. This initiates a wave of paranoia among consumers with regard to their playing experience. Though not perpetrated by poker sites themselves, cheating rakes an unimaginable amount of money from players, thus, discouraging anyone from joining.

In the recent years, famous names in the cyber poker industry have been dragged in the controversy of cheating. It is very likely that because of their ingenuity in the world of gambling and mastery of computer technology, they have devised a questionable way around the game. Many of these world-renowned poker figures have been proven to have cheated, while those who were cleared are still suffering the consequences and after-effects of false accusation. With respected names entangled in the controversy of online gambling fraud, it only portrays the cybergambling industry as a dirty world populated by dishonest people with one cheater exposing another cheater because of envy and greed -- comparable to underground cartels perpetrating organized crimes. Why still play and shed a serious amount of money when everybody, even the most notable player you ultimately look up to like a deity, cheats? Every sport and game needs an icon. Basketball has Michael Jordan, golf has Tiger Woods, tennis has Andre Agassi, and race car driving has Michael Schumacher. Online gambling, poker in particular, also needs a hero that will embody the true spirit of the game and will gain the confidence of the public in the game that has faced cynicisms from many people in all walks of life. Anyone who has half a brain would agree that a cheater does not fit the description.

Persecution never really gave the gambling world a break since the dawn of times, for it is perceived as just a mere vice and a waste of money. The same thing could also be said with the internet industry, which was even coined as "the window to hell" by most of technology pessimists. Anyone can only imagine the controversy surrounding the merging of these two industries. Online gambling is already facing a massive backlash from the moralists and some parties in the government. The domination of fraud by insatiable players will only stir up anger and antagonism and will only put the internet gambling industry way at the bottom of the mud pool. Only by implementing tighter security and by going after these felons, together with the support of players with the pure honesty, can the online gambling industry be truly vindicated.
