In playing poker, it pays to have an observant eye and a keen nose for emotions. Usually, there are players who have bad poker faces to give away. By seeing and feeling them out, expert poker sharps will know if the person in front of them are nervous, scared, angered or hopeful. These clues will tell if someone is having trouble with their card or is confident about their hand. These signs will help a player to decide on raising the stakes or folding.
However, with the more impersonal online poker, facial expressions or voice tones are about as helpful as knowing if the opponent is male or female. In short, a good poker face is no longer important. But as smart poker players know, if you cannot see or hear your opponents, there are other ways to nail them. As always, just by being extra-perceptive, a player could form a coherent pattern of just how the other player is faring.
Knowing what opponents are doing is an important detail that should be filed for reference. While someone else is making a play, the rest of the players are put on hold. Most of them either do something else or watch the ongoing plays. By clicking 'decision tabs,' a player can send out information about his hand. In case the player clicks 'raise any' on the tab, it is possible that in his possession is one strong hand. This may indicate the player has trash in his hand and is looking for a free card. By outbluffing this player, he may be blown out when someone else is trying to raise his card. But this trick will only work if he can discern that there is no check-raising involved; if there is resistance to the bluff call, it would be a wiser move to fold.
There are also players who use delaying strategy, and it pays to find out more about them. Sometimes, delay in play could be caused by bad connections or difficulty in making a play. However, some of them are really fishy characters that are only trying to devaluate their hand. It is always better to be on guard when this happens.
Talkative players have counterparts online, and these are called the 'chatters.' While some do not take chatting seriously, there are small clues that you can glean from all-too-talkative players. When someone writes too many things, informative or just random, that is a sign that he may be a fish. These people are found playing on loose games and have a hard time concentrating on their play. One can take advantage of them, as they are easy to distract. Other clues are players who write about how much they lost and how they enjoy playing. Chances are, they are either beginners or just having a hard time concentrating because of their previous losing streak.
A more obvious sign of a poor player is if he frequently reloads his bankroll. This person just screams to be relieved of his money -- that is why it is good to be on the lookout for them.
In playing poker, every clue is important. While focusing on these too much would ruin your fun, it does not hurt to check these things out once in a while. An observant and reserved player often wins more. Of course, not all clues are applicable to everyone as there are poker sharks lurking and casting out their baits just around the corner. The best way to find out if the clues work for you is to test them yourself.
