Poker Tournaments 1: Betting in High and Low Stakes Poker Games

Betting in High and Low Stakes Poker Games
In most poker tournaments, especially in the Texas Hold'em, there are many kinds of poker games being played. They are the high stakes and the low stakes games. Low stakes games are sometimes referred to as micro-stakes poker competitions. These are poker contests where the entrance fee or buy-in required for a player to take part in the game is relatively low, usually ranging from a minimum of $1 to a maximum of $5. In other games, the buy-in are a little higher. On the whole though, low-stakes poker games are known for their low starting bets. In essence, the stakes are not tremendous, hence the name.

Low stakes poker or micro-stakes games are truly enjoyable ways through which the average poker player can pass his or her time away. This is not to say however that these forms of poker games are not fit for the serious poker enthusiast. Actually, micro-stakes poker are also good for players who take the game seriously as this can be their stepping stones to larger poker competitions. Once they have mastered micro-stakes poker playing and have amassed a sizeable fortune, they can make a relatively easier adjustment once they make the decision to move up to another level of poker games, which is high-stakes playing, where larger pot prizes are waiting for most players.

With low stakes poker games, the winner's prize is definitely a lot smaller, but this does not mean that they are not profitable. When you are just an ordinary poker player having a fairly limited betting capital, then low stakes poker is the most suitable game for you. The initial or start-up bet requirement is quite low in these games. Yet, the profit that one can possibly take home by the game's end can be quite significant. Even a relatively small casino can offer its top small-stakes poker prize by as much as 50 times more than what a poker player initially wagers. Not a bad winning proposition if you are just starting out with your poker games with little capital and no real strategy to go by.

As for high-stakes games, no exact definition has been given to the term yet. It is generally understood though that high-stakes or high-limit poker is a game where the stakes are usually very high that many average poker players cannot afford it. Rather, only the ultra high-rollers get to play in these games.

High-limit poker games, or simply high stakes, are games where skill is the determining factor. Luck may have a say in the game, but it is the player's basic strategy that will earn him the pot prize. These are the kind of poker games where players attempt to outwit one another by reading body languages, quirky movements, etc. These unwritten signs are known more as poker tells and they are often read by veteran high stakes players.

In summary, what distinguishes low stakes games from its high stakes counterpart is not only in the size of the bet and pot involved but in the general quality of players composing both game levels. Low stakes games involve generally low wager requirements, with most of the players more or less amateur, though there are quite a number who play good poker games. High-stakes or high-limit poker, on the other hand, are often made up of skillful players, those who have been around for quite some time and who can readily meet the game's high initial betting standards.
