Poker Tournaments 2: Three Types of Poker Plays

Three Types of Poker Plays
Poker games have been with us for several decades, even centuries. During all these times, a number of poker variations have been conceptualized. At present, the most popular version of the game is Texas Hold'em, and the game itself has its own set of variations. Texas Hold'em has been known to be played in the limit, the no limit, and recently, the half-limit version.

There are actually no large differences in each of these Texas Hold'em variants, except in the basic rules being observed. In no limit games, for example, a player's position becomes important during the post flop stage. The flop is the point of the game, notably in Texas Hold'em, when the community cards are dealt, and where the player is positioned will determine when he or she will get to pick one or several community cards in order to complete his five-set hand. As it is, where the player is seated after the cards have been dealt will matter a great deal to the player. If he's to the dealer's immediate left, he could get to pick first, which is always a lucky move in any game.

With regards to limit poker games, position is often a crucial element. It is most important specifically at the preflop stage, or that point in the game when the community cards have not been dealt yet but will soon be. At this point, if a player is positioned early and decides to reveal his cards which he believes is good enough, he can possibly lose big later when the other players have chosen their community cards and came up with a much better hand.

Basically then, what distinguishes limit and no limit poker from each other is in terms of betting. In no limit, bets of whatever amount, as long as they are above the minimum set by the game, can be placed before, during, and even after the community cards have been dealt. In short, only a minimum bet is being observed in no limit but with regards the maximum bet, practically the sky is the limit. That is why in many no limit games, players who have lots of money on the play table are often at a big advantage.

With the limit type of poker plays, there have been a couple of variations within this particular poker game variant, largely depending on the size of the casino that you will be playing in. Generally though, two forms of limit poker are recognized, namely the stake limit type, and the limit selection type. Stake limit poker simply refers to the fact that there is a fixed maximum and minimum amount within which players can place their bets. They cannot go beyond that. Limit selection, meanwhile, is a limit type of poker play where the game selection is very few, especially with regards to tournaments. This means that no major competition is held, and the games are restricted to the ring and non-tournament game types.

There is another form of poker game involving a slightly different betting system. This is known as half limit poker. It basically still involves playing basic poker. The only difference is that with half limit, the maximum wager that players can place is about half the game's pot prize. Hence the term half limit. In general though, this particular poker variant is used more commonly in Omaha games, unlike the limit and no limit games which are usually associated with Texas Hold'em.

Getting to choose which poker variant will best work for you may not be that easy. Two factors, however, may be worth considering. These are your level of game play and your current bankroll. Once you get to identify how these factors stack up in your life, then choosing the best poker variant will become easier.
