Poker Tournaments 3: Playing in Single Table Tournaments

Playing in Single Table Tournaments
Single table poker competitions are immensely popular poker game types, especially in the internet. This particular type of poker game is also called by a variety of names such as Sit 'N Go tournaments, SnGs, or simply STTs. Whatever way you want to call it, there can be no doubt that single table games are perfect for players who want a fast-paced game of poker with some nice amounts of prizes waiting for the lucky gambler without too many players trying to grab each other's throats just to get hold of that prize.

Single table poker contests are also a form of investment for many poker players, especially those who have grand ambitions of someday being part of major poker tournaments like the World Series of Poker. This is largely because in many single table tilts, the tendency is for the participants to gradually diminish in number so that by the end of the game, there will only be one winner left standing (or more appropriately sitting). In short, a player can possibly find himself part of the elite players playing on the final table, assuming he is lucky enough. This is so much unlike multitable poker competitions where players can enter a dozen such games and somehow never getting the luck to reach the final game play. Before the advent of the single tables, such was the experience of many good poker players. Yet today, with so many single table poker contests taking place in practically every internet gaming site, some really good players have been able to make a name for themselves.

What makes most single table poker games even more viable is that they are low-cost games, meaning they require mostly low initial bets. In some cases, players are even allowed to play virtually free.

Single table games are also easy to spot. There is no fixed time schedule for a particular single table game to officially start. Once the game table gets filled up with the required number of poker players, the tournament will commence, and in many cases, the game gets finished in about an hour or less.

Another advantage of many single table contests is that if one player ends up using his entire bankroll and is forced to leave the game, the other players need not wait for a replacement player in order to continue with the game. There is no such rule in single table poker. The remaining players can continue with the game proper which is advantageous for them as there are now less antagonists involved. Eventually, more players will get eliminated, leading to short-handed tables, until only one player is left in the final table. The game essentially becomes a virtual survival of the fittest.

Of course, the blind size will also get to play a crucial role in how you will fare in many single table contests. As more and more players are eased out of the competition, the remaining players will be forced to take over the bets left over by the departing player. This may initially mean more money coming out of the players but in the end, it can also mean a higher pot prize for the ultimate winner in the final table.

That is why for most single table games, the ideal play strategy is to start playing tightly while the blind is still relatively small. Later, as more players go bankrupt and are forced to leave the game early, one can change gears and begin a loose game technique, especially if an increase in blind size has been significantly made.

Employing this particular poker game strategy carries a certain degree of logic. To understand it, we need to understand that most single table competitions pay 60 percent for first, 20 percent for second, and another 20 percent for third. This simply means that once there are only three players involved in a given single table game, a possible 60 percent payout may be awarded. If there are only two players left in the game, a 20 percent payout will be given. At the final table, if one player remains, then he gets a 20 percent payout as well.

Based on the preceding illustration, it is safe to conclude that when a player is involved in a three-player fight, then it is time to play loosely because higher bets will simply mean a higher take home prize. At least, with this particular scenario, you have secured a small amount of profit and possibly more assuming you will still be alive for a few more plays. Obviously, it pays a lot if you decide to raise your blinds. Gambling to win is definitely the logical path to take when you are in this crucial moment of a given single table game.

The preceding is just one aspect of the single table poker games. There are many other areas of this particular game that are likewise worth reading and studying about to enable you to better understand and appreciate the many intricacies involved in most single table contests. You may find a few of these said areas as just a simple waste of your time. But that should not be your outlook. In truth, they should be seen as positive and helpful guides meant to help you improve your poker games, especially if you are one who secretly dreams of making a fortune out of playing the highly-popular card game that we call poker.

Of course, when ranged against its multitable counterpart, single table poker competitions naturally pale in comparison especially in terms of pot prizes. This is not to say though that the latter is not a relatively generous game. On the contrary, it is, especially in the final leg of the contest when the players are left to about two three, and a raising of blinds is about to take place. It's just that with multitable, the game is quite large so it naturally follows that huge prizes will be at stake. Just the same, being able to master the single table games should be viewed as entry tickets to far more extravagant poker contests like the multitable competitions. It is always nicer to start at the bottom then slowly work yourself up, not only in poker games but in every facet of life as well.
